Fundamentals of Clinical and Translational Science (FunCaTS)
Are you interested in making a difference in the lives of the patients we serve? Do you care about making sure that scientific discoveries are translated into clinical practice? Clinical and translational science is the process of turning laboratory discoveries into actionable clinical interventions that can improve the health of communities.
Fundamentals of Clinical and Translational Science (FunCaTS) is a combination of 13 online modules strategically packaged together to enable medical professionals and allied health staff to expand their knowledge of the components of clinical and translational research. These components provide the fundamental knowledge to promote understanding of the process of bringing discoveries to the bedside and then to the population.
Program highlights
- Approximately four hours of educational content available anytime and anywhere.
- Self-directed and self-paced (asynchronous).
- External participants will have access to the course materials for one year. Internal Mayo Clinic employees have access indefinitely.
- A digital badge is awarded upon successful program completion for external registrants. A digital badge is not offered for internal registrants until the transition from My Learning to Learning Central is complete.

- FunCaTS is available to all Mayo Clinic employees and the general public.
Registration process
- Internal Mayo Clinic employees: Log in to the Mayo Clinic network and navigate to My Learning. Under "Find Learning," search for course code 502E00FCTS0000.
- External participants: Registration is available anytime on our Executive Education registration page.

The FunCaTS online self-paced course can be completed in about four hours and includes the following modules:

- Research Approaches for Collecting Scientific Evidence.
- Introduction to Study Design.
- How To Write a Research Proposal.
- Principles of Human Subjects Research.
- Statistics.
- Basic Principles.
- Questions Statisticians Ask.
- What are Confidence Intervals and P-values?.
- Statistical Errors and How to Avoid Them.
- Using Statistics as you Read the Literature.
- An Overview of Community-Engaged Research (CEnR).
- Responsible Conduct of Research.
