Modules

'The Promise of Epigenomics in Medical Research and Future Practice' (502E00CMA130040)

Epigenomics is the study of all the changes in gene function that occur without a change in the sequence of the DNA, known as epigenetic changes. Upon completion of this module, learners will be able to:

  • Define and explain the history of epigenetics and epigenomics
  • Identify how epigenetic mechanisms underlie the regulation of gene expression
  • Describe how DNA modification occurs — for example, the role of chromatin dynamics
  • Explain how epigenetics and epigenomics contribute to inheritance and human diseases
  • Discuss the use of epigenetics and epigenomics in diagnostics and therapeutics

Presenter: Raul A. Urrutia, M.D.

'Essentials of Microarray Technology' (502E00CMF120031)

High-throughput microarray technologies enable researchers to study gene expression, exon composition of transcripts, protein-binding sites, single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), gene copy number variations and other molecular events on the genome-wide scale. There are numerous platforms, but each follows a similar basic concept that must be understood to allow researchers to design quality experiments.
