2024 awards

The deadline for applications for the 2024 awards is Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2024, at 5 p.m. Central time. Awards will be announced in spring 2024.

For 2024, Benefactor-Funded Research Early-Career Development Awards are available in these focus areas:

Artificial intelligence (AI)

  • AI — Cancer
    • Tianqiao and Chrissy Chen Career Development Award in Translational Research (Cancer) — one award of $100,000 a year for two years. This award is designated to the use of artificial intelligence technology and modalities in cancer research. This award is restricted to individuals holding either an M.D., or an M.D. and Ph.D., or an equivalent medical degree, with an investigative focus in translational research.
  • AI — Neurosciences
    • Tianqiao and Chrissy Chen Career Development Award in Translation Research (Neuro) — one award of $100,000 a year for two years. This award is designated to promote the use of artificial intelligence and modalities in neurology, neurosurgery and neuropsychiatry research with a focus on sleep, aging and aging brain, pain, and the interactions of the brain with the immune system and metabolism. This award is restricted to individuals holding either an M.D., or an M.D., and Ph.D., or an equivalent medical degree, with an investigative focus in translational research.

Biostatistics or clinical trial design

  • Daniel J. Sargent, Ph.D., Career Development Award in Cancer Research — one award of $100,000 a year for up to three years. Applicant must be a cancer biostatistician or conducting research that involves innovative cancer clinical trial design or analysis.

Cancer

  • Christian Haub Family Career Development Award in Cancer Research Honoring Richard F. Emslander, M.D. — one award of $100,000 a year for up to three years. This award is restricted to applicants at Mayo Clinic's campus in Arizona.
  • Exact Sciences Career Development Award in Cancer Innovation Honoring Susan L. Ahlquist — one award of $100,000 a year for up to three years.
  • Karl-Erivan Haub Family Career Development Award in Cancer Research Honoring Richard F. Emslander, M.D. — one award of $100,000 a year for up to three years. This award is restricted to applicants at Mayo Clinic's campus in Rochester, Minnesota.
  • Vernon F. and Mae E. Thompson Charitable Foundation Career Development Award in GI Cancer Research — one award of $100,000 a year for up to two years. Investigators with research focused on pancreatic, esophageal and colorectal cancers are encouraged to apply.
  • Vranos Family Foundation Career Development Award in Prostate Cancer — two awards are available. One award of $100,000 a year for three years and one award of $100,000 a year for two years.

Cardiovascular diseases

  • Cardiovascular Sciences Career Development Award — one award of $75,000 a year for three years.
  • Career Development Award in Cardiovascular Disease Research Honoring Earl H. Wood, M.D. — one award of $100,000 a year for up to three years. This award is restricted to projects focused on promoting innovation in interventional cardiology.
  • Ted and Loretta Rogers Cardiovascular Career Development Award Honoring Hugh C. Smith, M.D. — one award of $100,000 a year for one year.
  • Thomas H. and Dorthy S. Corson Career Development Award in Cardiovascular Disease Research — one award of $100,000 a year for up to three years.

Endocrinology

  • Robert and Elizabeth Strickland Career Development Award in Endocrinology, Metabolism, Diabetes, and Nutrition — one award of $50,000 a year for up to three years.
  • Kathryn H. and Roger Penske Career Development Award in Endocrinology in Honor of Dr. Ian Hay — one award of $50,000 a year for up to three years.

Gastroenterology

  • Marty Nelson Career Development Award in Gastrointestinal Sciences Research — one award of $100,000 a year for up to three years. This award is to support gastrointestinal sciences research with an emphasis on Crohn's disease.

Neurology

  • Kevin Merszei Career Development Award in Neurodegenerative Diseases Research in Honor of Janet Vittone, M.D. — one award of $100,000 a year for up to three years. Projects of any neurodegenerative disease research focus are welcome. Applicants with projects focusing on cognitive decline are especially encouraged to apply.
  • Mayo Clinic Myron and Jane Hanley Career Development Award in Stroke Research — one award of $50,000 a year for up to three years.

Ophthalmology

  • Leonard and Mary Lou Hoeft Career Development Award Fund in Ophthalmology Research — one award of $100,000 a year for up to three years. Applicants conducting research in innovative approaches to understanding eye function, preventing and treating eye disease, and improving good vision are especially encouraged to apply.

Orthopedics

  • Career Development Award in Orthopedics Research (1 of 2) — one award of $100,000 a year for two years. Open to all applicants.

Pediatric and neonatal

  • Marcia T. Kreyling Career Development Award in Pediatric and Neonatal Research — one award of $50,000 a year for two years.

Pulmonology

  • Walter and Leonore Annenberg Career Development Award in Pulmonary Medicine — two awards of $50,000 a year for up to three years.
  • Lucile Nelson Clinician Career Development Award in Pulmonary Diseases Research — one award of $50,000 a year for one year. This award is restricted to practicing clinicians in pulmonary diseases research.
  • Brewer Family Career Development Award in Support of Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis and Related Interstitial Lung Disease Research — one award of $75,000 a year for up to three years. This award is for idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis and related interstitial lung disease research.

Regenerative biotherapeutics

  • Jane Woodruff Career Development Award in Regenerative Medicine at Mayo Clinic in Florida — one award of $100,000 a year for up to three years. This award is restricted to applicants at Mayo Clinic's campus in Florida.

Rheumatology

  • Mayo Clinic Career Development Award in Rheumatoid Arthritis Research — two awards of $100,000 a year for up to three years.

Transplant

  • Paulette E. and Joseph R. Maslick Career Development Award in Transplant and Cancer Research at Mayo Clinic in Arizona — one award of $100,000 a year for up to three years. This award is restricted to applicants at Mayo Clinic's campus in Arizona.
  • Jane Woodruff Career Development Award in Transplant at Mayo Clinic in Florida — one award of $100,000 a year for up to three years. This award is restricted to applicants at Mayo Clinic's campus in Florida.
  • Clinician Career Development Award in Transplant Research Honoring Brigid Kiley — one award of $50,000 a year for up to three years. This award supports clinicians, especially junior investigators, in the fields of solid organ and bone marrow transplant research.
