Tracking and Responding to Physician Well-Being Metrics

The Program on Physician Well-Being assists with prospectively and longitudinally measuring different dimensions of well-being, professional satisfaction and burnout among physicians to identify changes and trends within Mayo Clinic. Data are used to evaluate how organizational changes impact the satisfaction and well-being of physicians.

Within the Department of Medicine at Mayo Clinic's campus in Rochester, Minnesota, physicians are surveyed annually with reports provided to divisional and departmental leadership. At the organizational level all physicians across the enterprise are surveyed biannually, and results are analyzed by work group.

Leadership receives guidance from a Physician Well-Being Resources Playbook. The guide provides a perspective on how to approach physician well-being and the organization's overarching approach to supporting physicians throughout the career span. Information is included on:

  • How physician well-being is monitored and how to understand the data.
  • How to respond to the data and engage with staff to develop solutions.
  • Mayo Clinic's Program on Physician Well-Being research.
  • Mayo Clinic internal resources for individuals.
  • External resources for individuals.
