Education and Training

Educational offerings in the Mayo Clinic Kern Center for the Science of Health Care Delivery provide content that meets individual learners' needs to enhance the provision of patient-centered, cost-effective healthcare.

The center teaches medical professionals about complex issues in the healthcare system today and the tools they need to fix them. Such education creates a knowledgeable team equipped to improve healthcare quality and patient outcomes while increasing the efficiency of the delivery system.

The center takes a comprehensive approach to developing specialized knowledge, methods and curricula for integrating healthcare delivery science into Mayo Clinic's educational offerings.

The educational program seeks to:

  • Create and evaluate learning resources that promote health, healthcare and innovation for clinicians, patients and the community.
  • Ensure a workforce of clinicians, educators and consumers who are knowledgeable and able to thrive in settings that feature innovative healthcare delivery methods.
  • Invest in the training of clinicians with expertise in health services research.
  • Launch an educational infrastructure for sharing and spreading learning opportunities that meet the individualized needs of a wide variety of learners.
  • Network with national groups to enhance Mayo Clinic's reputation as a leader in healthcare delivery science and innovation.

Education for medical professionals

In the Mayo Clinic Kern Center for the Science of Health Care Delivery, educational opportunities include lectures, mentored experiences, presentations and courses on healthcare delivery.

Scholars programs

The center supports competitive programs for Health Care Delivery Scholars and Surgical Outcomes Research Fellows. These programs are the center's innovative approach to training the next generation of healthcare delivery experts. They expand Mayo Clinic's capacity for health services research and practice transformation.

Didactic coursework is drawn from the curriculum in the Mayo Clinic Center for Clinical and Translational Science (CCaTS), while hands-on mentoring and training comes from mentors within the Mayo Clinic Kern Center for the Science of Health Care Delivery and from collaborators across the enterprise.

Through interactions across the center's different research activities, scholars and fellows learn about secondary data analysis, systematic literature reviews and meta-analyses, and various statistical and data-modeling techniques. They are mentored in both the selection and conduct of their research, which is chosen to address problems they and their colleagues see in healthcare systems today. Many of the scholars go on to successfully compete for additional career development awards from Mayo Clinic and external funding sources.

Internships and other research learning opportunities

The center supports interns and graduate and postgraduate fellows with a goal of developing well-rounded health science researchers. These individuals learn how to conduct health science research and how to identify questions that are relevant to patients, healthcare teams and others along the continuum of healthcare delivery. They also learn current methodology for data collection and analysis.

Healthcare delivery selective

The center offers a longitudinal selective in the Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine. The selective introduces medical students to the center's systematic approach and applications to solve challenges for patients, healthcare professionals and the healthcare system.

Grand Rounds

On a regular basis, center leaders, practice champions and invited guest speakers give Grand Rounds presentations that provide examples of innovative, transformative, data-driven solutions. Presenters educate attendees about healthcare delivery methodologies and new investigative techniques. And they expand upon quality, safety, and experiential metrics and potential interventions to transform the experience of health and healthcare for patients and staff.

Publications

The center's team lectures and publishes extensively on topics related to healthcare delivery. Publications allow center experts to share their knowledge with healthcare professionals around the world. Other Mayo Clinic publications for medical professionals offer insights on the applications of healthcare delivery into virtually all areas of practice.

These education opportunities demonstrate Mayo Clinic's ongoing commitment to recruiting, retaining and developing the healthcare workforce of the future. The center seeks to nurture healthcare delivery scientists who propel innovation in clinical practice. The center's robust education program strengthens Mayo's position as a top research institution and a nationally recognized leader in the changing landscape of healthcare delivery.
