SUMMARY

As a health services researcher in Mayo Clinic's Division of Health Care Policy and Research, as well as the Mayo Clinic Robert D. and Patricia E. Kern Center for the Science of Health Care Delivery, Aaron C. Spaulding, Ph.D., conducts research related to the outcomes, quality and value of health care.

Dr. Spaulding utilizes quantitative, qualitative and mixed-methods approaches to evaluate health care outcomes and organizations. His research focuses on outcomes of care, evaluation of quality interventions and influences of federal policies on health outcomes, as well as how organizational characteristics are associated with organizational and patient level outcomes.

Focus areas

  • Outcomes of care. In order to provide care that meets the needs of patients and the overall population, there is a need to understand current outcomes based out of current process. Dr. Spaulding's work in this area allows for comparison of new interventions, processes of care or technologies designed to enhance the delivery of care.
  • Value of care. Determining the value of care requires a multifaceted approach to analyzing aspects of cost, quality and outcomes from the perspective of different stakeholders. Dr. Spaulding's research in assessing value in this manner allows a better understanding of the demands and opportunities within the current health system. This work also allows a fuller understanding of how changes may encourage or inhibit desired results.

Significance to patient care

Dr. Spaulding's research helps improve patient care through the evaluation and comparison of outcomes and value. By working to fully understand opportunities to improve the care process, Dr. Spaulding aims to implement changes that will enhance the provision of care.
