This is a prospective trial of facial nerve monitoring in patients undergoing parotidectomy to see if the facial nerve monitor provides useful information to operating surgeons and if the information provided can predict degrees of postoperative facial nerve paresis. Additionally, the study will determine if performing daily facial rehabilitation exercises provides a benefit in reducing time to recovery of temporary post-parotidectomy paresis.

The purpose of this study is to determine the benefit to postoperative facial nerve function of using electromyography (EMG) based monitoring of facial nerve function during surgery to remove the parotid gland for superficial benign lesions.

The purpose of this study is to document the safety of the Medtronic automatic periodic stimulating (APS) Electrode Stimulator during a parotidectomy and potentially prevent post-operative facial nerve weakness, which is a relatively common outcome after parotid surgery.

The objectives of this study are to explore the quality of life value of various surgical and functional outcomes after parotidectomy from a patient-centered perspective, develop a comprehensive patient-centered outcome measure after parotidectomy using a patient survey, and to validate the content of the above survey.
