Closing the Gap: Improving Cancer Screening in Patients with Limited English Proficiency

The purpose of this study is to bring our expertise with community-engaged research to the clinical setting through the Health Equity Section (HES) in order to eliminate cancer screening health disparities among patients with limited english proficiency (LEP) in a large primary care practice.

Inclusion Criteria:

Aim 1

  • Adult patients with limited english proficiency (LEP) (ages 21 and older) will be recruited from the Mayo Clinic Employee and Community Health practices, targeting 3 subgroups/strata:
    • Women ages 50-64 who are eligible for all 3 recommended cancer screenings (breast, cervical, colorectal) but have completed none of them 
    • Men age 50-74 who have not completed colorectal cancer screening 
    • Adult patients with a family history of cancer documented by self-report in the electronic medical record who have not been screened as appropriate

Aim 2

  • Adult healthcare providers (physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants) will be identified who have the most concentrated contact with patients with limited english proficiency (LEP) 
  • Medical interpreters who participate frequently in primary care visits at Mayo Clinic will be identified, stratified by language/ethnicity 
  • Likewise, Rochester Healthy Community Partnership (RHCP) community leaders will be identified
