SUMMARY

The research of Mark L. Wieland, M.D., M.P.H., focuses on community- and clinic-based strategies to promote health equity. In community settings, Dr. Wieland works with community and academic partners through community-based participatory research to address health promotion and disparities in the management of chronic disease. Community-based participatory research is an approach in which the target population is involved in every stage of the research process. In clinical settings, Dr. Wieland works with colleagues to develop systems of care to reduce practice-based health disparities.

Focus areas

  • Community-based participatory research. Dr. Wieland works with community and academic partners to develop interventions with a community-based participatory research approach and to test the interventions through clinical trials. These include clinical trials related to cardiovascular risk reduction, diabetes self-management, tuberculosis prevention and coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) mitigation among minority populations.
  • Immigrant and refugee health. Dr. Wieland conducts formative research and intervention work in clinical and community settings with immigrant and refugee populations. This work includes documenting and responding to clinic-based disparities in patients with limited English proficiency and addressing health promotion and chronic disease management through community-based interventions.
  • Practice-based health disparities. Dr. Wieland works with colleagues to identify and address health disparities in clinical settings through a population health lens.

Significance to patient care

Dr. Wieland's work with communities and patients is helping achieve shared goals for health promotion, chronic disease management and health equity.
