Mechanisms of Eye Pressure Changes

To determine the reasons why eye pressure varies over time and between individuals. For patients with glaucoma, we are also trying to determine the mechanisms that control changes in eye pressure with the disease and standard treatments.

Elegibilidad para la participación

Inclusion Criteria:

General Inclusion for all

  • Patients of the Ophthalmology Department at Mayo Clinic Rochester
  • Patients with and without glaucoma will be included
  • Patients with chronic disease (e.g. hypertension) will be included as long as:
    • Condition is stable 
    • Does not require treatment other than medications 
    • Are not using systemic steroids or medications known to affect aqueous humor flow rate (particularly beta-adrenergic blocking agents)

Genetics of Aqueous Humor Dynamics

  • Subjects for this portion of the study will be recruited from participants in the Hereditary Eye Diseases (HED) study (PI – Dr. A.O. Edwards; IRB #06-007210) who have previously had genotyping performed as part of that study

Aqueous Humor Dynamics of Ocular Hypertension and Glaucoma

  • Subjects for this portion of the study will be recruited from untreated newly diagnosed OHT and OAG patients of the Ophthalmology Department.

Aqueous Humor Dynamics of Trabectome Surgery

  • Subjects for this study will be recruited from phakic patients who are scheduled to undergo Trabectome ab interno trabeculectomy
  • Subjects must be in good general health

Characterizing the Reproducibility of EVP Measurements in Humans

  • Subjects will be recruited from students, employees and patients of Mayo Clinic and local area residents
  • Males and females between the ages of 18-65
  • Subjects with chronic disease (e.g. hypertension) will be included if
    • Their condition is stable 
    • Does not require treatment other than medications 
    • Are not using systemic medications known to affect aqueous humor flow rate or IOP (steroids, beta-blockers, diuretics)

Exclusion Criteria:

General exclusion for all

  • Any history of intraocular:
    • Ssurgery or trauma 
    • Narrow angles 
    • Uveitis 
    • Myopia greater than -4.00D 
    • Hyperopia greater than +2.00D
  • Pregnant or nursing women

Aqueous Humor Dynamics of Ocular Hypertension and Glaucoma

  • Subjects with advanced glaucoma or IOP>35 mmHg

Aqueous Humor Dynamics of Trabectome Surgery

  • Patients with end-stage glaucoma or evidence of corneal edema will also be excluded

Characterizing the Reproducibility of EVP Measurements in Humans

  • Any history of ocular pathology including
    • Intraocular surgery or trauma 
    • Narrow angles, glaucoma 
    • Diabetic eye disease 
    • Uveitis 
    • Herpetic eye disease 
    • Myopia greater than -4.00D, or hyperopia greater than +2.00D
