Academic Publishing

The course covers the process of academic publishing, including:

  • Determining what to publish.
  • Mastering the unique style of "academic" or "scholarly" writing.
  • Crafting the appropriate narrative or message based on the target audience.
  • Choosing the right journal.
  • Preparing a manuscript.
  • Selecting a title.
  • Avoiding pitfalls such as plagiarism and publication bias.
  • Authorship considerations.
  • Going through the submission and peer-review process.
  • Learning about galley proofs and communicating with the media.
  • Anticipating post-publication activities, such as letters to the editor and corrections.

  • Approximately seven hours of educational content available anytime and anywhere.
  • Self-directed and self-paced (asynchronous).
  • Participants will have access to the course materials for one year.
  • A digital badge is awarded upon successful completion of the program.

Cost

The course cost is $600 for non-Mayo participants. Mayo Clinical employee internal pricing is discounted and shown after logging in to the Executive Education registration page.

M. Hassan Murad, M.D., M.P.H., research chair in the Division of Preventive, Occupational and Aerospace Medicine, teaches the course. He is a professor of medicine and a clinical epidemiologist who leads the Mayo Clinic Evidence-Based Practice Research Program and conducts methodological research to improve translational research methods.
