Paul Calabresi Program in Clinical-Translational Research at Mayo Clinic

Summary

The Paul Calabresi Program in Clinical-Translational Research at Mayo Clinic is designed to prepare outstanding clinicians and researchers to become independently funded clinical-translational therapeutic oncology investigators. The program is funded by the National Cancer Institute.

The program combines didactic training and mentored research experience, extending two or more years with 75 percent protected research and training time. An annual progress review is required.

Program requirements

In addition to completing the required courses, research scholars are expected to:

Design and complete at least one translational research endeavor
Participate actively in at least one clinical trial as either the principal investigator or the co-investigator
Participate in basic research
Participate regularly in the working group relevant to their research, including weekly or biweekly lab or project meetings, journal clubs, and clinical conferences
Give a formal presentation of progress either in person or in writing to the advisory committee of the Paul Calabresi Program
Develop a funding strategy

In addition to completing the core requirements listed above, doctoral scholars are expected to:

Attend weekly clinical case conferences in their relevant disease track — for example, women's cancers, neuro-oncology, and so on
Attend the weekly Core Curriculum Lecture Series that covers all of the clinical issues for the entire range of solid tumors and hematologic malignancies

Certification

Through Mayo Clinic's Center for Clinical and Translational Science (CCaTS) and in combination with Mayo Clinic Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences' master's program offerings, scholars can elect to receive either a certificate in clinical research (12 credit hours) or a master's degree in clinical research (24 credit hours).

Eligibility

Appointees must be citizens or noncitizen nationals of the United States or must have been legally admitted as permanent residents.

Additional eligibility requirements include:

Medical doctor (M.D. or D.O.) applicants. Candidates must have completed their clinical training. Most candidates will have completed fellowships in hematology-oncology, pediatric hematology-oncology, gynecologic oncology, surgical oncology or radiation oncology. Physicians who have completed other specialty training may be considered as well. Candidates can be senior fellows or junior faculty at the start of their academic careers.
Ph.D. prepared applicants. Candidates must have a doctoral-level degree, have completed a minimum of two years of postdoctoral research training and be committed to a career in translational research.
