Sellon.Jacob@mayo.edu Clinical Profile

SUMMARY

The research of Jacob L. Sellon, M.D., focuses on the development of diagnostic ultrasound techniques and ultrasound-guided minimally invasive treatments for musculoskeletal conditions, including osteoarthritis and tendon disorders.

Focus areas

  • Ultrasound imaging in the diagnosis of musculoskeletal disorders
  • Ultrasound-guided procedures in the treatment of musculoskeletal disorders
  • Regenerative treatments for musculoskeletal disorders, including platelet-rich plasma

Significance to patient care

Diagnostic musculoskeletal ultrasound has many advantages over other diagnostic imaging techniques, including patient convenience — it can be done in office and combined with clinical evaluation — no potentially harmful radiation, and decreased cost to patients and the health care system.

Currently there are few evidence-based, nonsurgical treatments for many musculoskeletal conditions, such as osteoarthritis and tendinopathy (for example, tennis elbow). However, there are many promising minimally invasive, potentially regenerative treatments, including stem cells and platelet-rich plasma, that require further research. These treatments may provide patients with nonsurgical options that are less expensive, have lower risk and allow faster recovery.
