SUMMARY

The research interests of Brian N. Lundstrom, M.D., Ph.D., focus on better understanding neuronal excitability. Brain function in sickness and health is largely determined by the excitability of neurons. For example, epilepsy is a neurological disorder defined by abnormal neuronal excitability.

Focus areas

  • Quantitative electroencephalogram (EEG) analysis with a focus on slow wave activity
  • Noninvasive and invasive brain stimulation
  • Computational neuronal and neural network models

Significance to patient care

Neurological care is often based on empirical trials of medication and stimulation therapies. Changes are made when it becomes clinically evident that the current approach has failed. By estimating neuronal excitability, Dr. Lundstrom's goal is to optimize treatment before failures occur.
