SUMMARY

Sarah E. Kingsbury, Au.D., is an audiologist whose research interests integrate hearing and balance factors with aviation and aerospace applications.

As a member of the Aerospace Medicine and Vestibular Research Laboratory, Dr. Kingsbury works with her colleagues to develop innovative research protocols and generate intellectual property with Mayo Clinic Ventures and the Department of Business Development. She uses clinical audiology practices and skills to complete interprofessional research that offers insight into human performance in extreme environments.

Focus areas

  • Vestibular responses to electrical stimulation and visual-vestibular conflict leading to simulator sickness.
  • Human factors in aviation and at altitude.
  • Interprofessional management of dizziness and the use of innovative technology to mitigate fall risk.
  • Tinnitus management and mitigation.

Significance to patient care

The research conducted by Dr. Kingsbury and her lab colleagues on human factors in aviation and altitude environments has significant clinical implications for people with auditory and balance concerns. Along with assessing and managing nonvestibular dizziness, Dr. Kingsbury is interested in developing therapeutics and rehabilitation tools for people with vertigo and at risk of falls. Dr. Kingsbury also hopes to improve tinnitus management by investigating new treatments and conducting clinical trials.
