SUMMARY

The research of Peter C. Gay, M.D., focuses on better understanding the delivery of noninvasive ventilation (NIV) for treatment of patients with chronic respiratory failure.

Coverage criteria and reimbursement, most importantly from Medicare, have become so complex that they create a barrier to appropriate patient care. A technical expert panel, composed of experts throughout the United States, has completed and published a thorough review of the scientific literature regarding coverage of NIV.

Efforts are now ongoing to change policy so that we may "deliver the right device to the right patient at the right time."

Focus areas

  • NIV treatment for patients with hypercapnic respiratory failure due to:
    • Neuromuscular and restrictive lung disease.
    • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
    • Central sleep apnea.
    • Hypoventilation syndrome.
    • Failure of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) for obstructive sleep apnea.

Significance to patient care

NIV is now the treatment of choice for many chronic respiratory failure problems, and in several categories of diseases it clearly has been shown to reduce mortality. In virtually all of the disease categories listed above there has been improvement in quality of life. The goal of the program is to foster the success of the Optimal NIV Medicare Access Promotion.
