SUMMARY

A former Mayo Clinic research investigator, Christopher G. Chute, M.D., Dr. P.H., established the Mayo Clinic Division of Biomedical Informatics, overseeing a program of applied research and development focusing on clinical and genomic data sources, management, standardization and interpretation. He was division chair of biomedical informatics for 20 years. Dr. Chute retired from Mayo in 2014, but remains Professor Emeritus of Biomedical Informatics in the Department of Health Sciences Research.

Focus areas

Dr. Chute's research focus was in the domain of biomedical terminology and ontology, with a long-standing emphasis on scalable terminology services that can be used across biology and medicine. This work extended into high-throughput disease phenotyping methods using electronic health records.

Dr. Chute was principal investigator or co-principal investigator on a broad portfolio of federal grants, including:

He is board certified in internal medicine and clinical informatics, and an elected fellow of the American College of Physicians, the American College of Epidemiology and the American College of Medical Informatics.

Significance to patient care

To make informatics principles truly applicable across the coalescing communities of biological research and medical practice, a strong engagement must be made with standards for biohealth data interchange and interoperability.
