SUMMARY

Kasey R. Boehmer, Ph.D., M.P.H., is assistant professor of Health Services Research in the Knowledge and Evaluation Research (KER) Unit at Mayo Clinic. Her primary research interest is the translation of evidence-based care for patients with chronic conditions into practice in a manner that is consistent with patients' capacity to access that care and enact self-management. She is an expert in qualitative and mixed methods research, both of which she uses to better understand the patient experience of living with chronic illness.

Focus areas

  • Minimally disruptive medicine and patient capacity. Dr. Boehmer studies the work of being a patient with chronic illness and what constitutes patient capacity for self-care and quality of life. She has authored a Theory of Patient Capacity, developed the ICAN Discussion Aid for patient-clinician conversation about capacity, and developed an intervention called Capacity Coaching designed to assist overwhelmed patients by increasing their capacity and reducing their treatment burden.
  • Undercared-for chronic suffering. Dr. Boehmer studies the patient experience of living with undercared-for chronic suffering, which is defined as living with conditions or symptoms that are difficult to diagnose, treat or measure under the typical medical paradigm. Her research on this topic will lead to clinical interventions to improve the care experience for these patients.
  • Professional development. As faculty of Mayo Clinic Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, Dr. Boehmer focuses on strategies to support and improve the mental health and well-being of graduate students. She is a leader in the Initiative for Maximizing Student Development (IMSD) and Post-baccalaureate Research Education Program (PREP).

Significance to patient care

Dr. Boehmer is committed to improving the overall experience for patients living with chronic illnesses. Through her work, she hopes that patient care will pursue patient goals with the least possible health care footprint on their lives. While chronic illness is an increasingly common experience, Dr. Boehmer's desire is that patients will thrive while working through health challenges.
