A Study of the Perceptions of Older Adults on Opioids

About this study

The purpose of this study is to assess the experiences and perceptions of older adults with chronic pain on the impact of opioids on analgesia and cognition through qualitative analysis.  

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Individuals age 65 or older.
  • Individuals visiting their primary care providers for primary care. 
  • Individuals with a history of chronic pain (and without).
  • Individuals with active or recent (within 12 months) prescription opioid use for pain.
  • Individuals with cognitive impairment who retain self-report capacity.

Exclusion Criteria:

  • Individuals < 65 years of age.
  • Individuals who are non-English speaking.
  • Individuals in hospice care at the time of enrollment.
  • Individuals with impaired capacity for self-reporting on pain severity, cognition, and daily functioning (i.e., severe dementia).
