SUMMARY

Nafisseh S. Warner, M.D., studies the associations of pain and opioids with cognitive decline in older adults. Her research interests include pain management and neurocognitive outcomes in the aging population, with the goal of optimizing pain treatment outcomes in older adults while minimizing adverse effects.

  • Exploring the associations among prescription opioids, cognitive function and brain structure in older adults.
  • Analyzing the relationships between pain and cognition in older adults.
  • Evaluating longitudinal trends in opioid and nonopioid analgesic use in the aging population.
  • Understanding patient perceptions and barriers to opioid use and its impact on cognition.

Significance to patient care

Chronic pain is prevalent in older adults, and prescription opioids are often used to treat pain in this population. It is critically important to understand the long-term effects of prescription opioid use in older adults. Also important is the development of pain pathways that minimize side effects while maximizing patient-specific health goals.
