A Screening Tool to Predict Post Intensive Care Syndrome (PICS) in the Critically Ill

About this study

The purpose of this study is to evaluate whether post-ICU assessment predicts PICS at 3 months and to validate a screening tool to identify patients at risk for PICS.  

 

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

Inclusion Criteria:

ICU patients who spent over 48 hours in the ICU and met at least one of the following criteria:

  • Patient was CAM-ICU positive during ICU stay;
  • Need for mechanical ventilation;
  • Need for vasopressors;
  • Need for acute non-invasive positive pressure ventilation;
  • Need for supplemental oxygen via nonrebreather mask, high flow nasal cannula;
  • Needed sedation.

Exclusion Criteria:

  • Patients with known prior diagnosis of psychotic disorders such as schizophrenia or acute alcohol/substance intoxication/withdrawal.
  • Admission for suicide attempt.
  • Known prior cognitive impairment or severe Alzheimer’s disease or dementia of any etiology.
  • Life expectancy < 3 months.
  • Non-English speaking.
  • Severe current cognitive impairment (3 or more errors on 6-item cognitive screen) traumatic brain injury.
  • Cerebrovascular accidents with resultant moderate to severe cognitive deficits or ADL disability.
  • Parkinson’s disease.
  • Huntington’s disease.
  • Acquired or congenital mental retardation.
  • ICU admission post cardiopulmonary resuscitation with suspected anoxic injury.
  • Blind.
  • Deaf.
  • Prisoners.
  • Patients who are homeless and have no secondary contact person available.
  • Wheelchair bound prior to admission.
