Mentoring the next generation of women's health researchers

The BIRCWH program recruits and trains outstanding young investigators in interdisciplinary women's health research to lead the translation of scientific findings into better health for women.

BIRCWH Program

The Building Interdisciplinary Research Careers in Women's Health (BIRCWH) program combines advanced training with research independence in specific areas of interest to provide researchers with career development opportunities. The program augments participants' research skills through mentored, personalized research experiences, leading to independent scientific careers addressing women's health concerns.

Funding for three BIRCWH scholars is provided by the National Institutes of Health's Office of Research on Women's Health. In recognition of the importance of research on women's health issues and sex-related health differences, Mayo Clinic provides funding for an additional scholar.

Funding

BIRCWH K12 scholars receive $40,000 a year for K12 research-related expenses. Scholars also receive $3,000 a year for travel related to K activities, including the annual NIH BIRCWH meeting and Midwest BIRCWH Consortium Meeting. The funding year runs from May 1 to April 30, with no carry forward.

Women's Health Scholars receive funding for research and travel depending on the institutional funding source. Specifics will be shared by program leadership.

Scholars

As junior faculty members, BIRCWH scholars conduct research on a wide variety of topics related to women's health. Recent BIRCWH scholars include:

  • Aysegul Atasoy Zeybek, Ph.D.
