SUMMARY

Demilade A. Adedinsewo, M.B., Ch.B., has research interests in cardiovascular epidemiology, women's heart health and cardiovascular disease disparities. She is also studying the application of artificial intelligence (AI) tools in cardiovascular disease detection.

Focus areas

  • Women's heart health. There are sex-specific differences in the manifestation, progression and management of certain cardiovascular diseases. Dr. Adedinsewo's research goals are to better understand cardiomyopathies among reproductive-age women, evaluate associated risk factors such as arrhythmia development and potentially identify therapeutic targets.
  • Cardiovascular disease disparities. The burden of cardiovascular disease is significantly higher among people of African ancestry, whereas the management of cardiovascular disease is based primarily on scientific studies done in white populations. Few studies have identified the benefits of specific cardiovascular therapies among African Americans. Dr. Adedinsewo is studying cardiac conditions unique to this patient population, such as peripartum cardiomyopathy, and evaluating new ways to engage minority patients, specifically people of African ancestry, in clinical research in the U.S. and internationally.
  • AI in cardiovascular medicine. Recent advances of AI applications in clinical care are impressive and likely to progress rapidly over the next few years. Specifically, deep learning (a form of AI) has achieved near human and even superhuman performance in some fields. Dr. Adedinsewo is studying ways to leverage AI technology in cardiovascular disease detection as well as expand the reach of these technologies to underserved communities.

Significance to patient care

Dr. Adedinsewo's goal is to better understand cardiovascular pathology among women and minority groups so that this knowledge can be used to guide patient care. Ultimately, her goal is to improve cardiovascular care and decrease associated morbidity and mortality through the implementation of research findings into clinical practice.
