About the Lab

The Neuroregeneration and Neurorehabilitation Laboratory was founded in 2003 by Isobel A. Scarisbrick, Ph.D., a biologist and medical scientist in the Mayo Clinic Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and the Rehabilitation Medicine Research Center. Dr. Scarisbrick's Neuroregeneration and Neurorehabilitation Laboratory is closely aligned and collaborative with the Rehabilitation Medicine Research Center, the Center for Regenerative Biotherapeutics, the Center for Multiple Sclerosis and Autoimmune Neurology and the Neural Engineering Laboratory.

Dr. Scarisbrick's laboratory is focused on neural repair and neural regeneration and seeks to solve fundamental mysteries of the biology and physiology underlying these processes that will inform mechanisms and new targets for patient therapy. The lab's research team is composed of experts in neuropathology, biochemistry, molecular and stem cell biology, and rehabilitation.

Vision

The mission of Dr. Scarisbrick's Neuroregeneration and Neurorehabilitation Laboratory is to improve functional outcomes in patients with neurological injury or disease. The lab seeks to uncover fundamental biological mechanisms applicable to a wide range of neurological conditions with a unique focus on spinal cord injury and multiple sclerosis.

Goals

  • Understand biological mechanisms of neural injury and how these can be targeted therapeutically to foster repair.
  • Discover new targets to promote neural regeneration and recovery of function in patients with neurological injury and disease.
  • Identify new ways to tap into the innate regenerative capacity of the brain and spinal cord.
  • Bring together the latest expertise and technologies to understand regenerative mechanisms.
  • Translate updated information into new therapies for patients.
  • Train the next generation of neurobiologists to expedite discovery of new targets for neural repair, neural regeneration and neurorehabilitation to improve patient functional outcomes.
