Mayo Clinic's Microscopy & Cell Analysis Core offers development and implementation of new microscopy and flow cytometry techniques.

Overview

The Microscopy and Cell Analysis Core is a Mayo Clinic resource facility in Rochester, Minnesota, equipped and expertly staffed to provide specimen preparation, light and electron microscopy, multiparameter flow analysis and cell-sorting services.

Specialized instrumentation and procedures include:

  • Live cell sorting
  • Flow cytometry
  • X-ray probe microanalysis — including multiple transmission electron microscopes (TEMs) and a scanning electron microscope (SEM)
  • Negative staining for electron microscopy
  • Cryoultramicrotomy
  • Ultrastructural pathology
  • 3D reconstruction from serial-sectioned specimens and high-resolution images using image averaging of negative-stained and cryotomography specimens
  • Two-photon microscopy
  • Laser confocal microscopy
  • Total internal reflection fluorescence microscopy
  • Whole-slide scanning

In January 2013, the Flow Cytometry/Optical Microscopy Core (established in 1987) merged with the Electron Microscopy Core (established in 1959) to form the Microscopy and Cell Analysis Core.

Personnel include over 25 full-time staff members, most of whom have more than 20 years of laboratory experience. Core staff members are available for the development and implementation of new microscopy and flow cytometry techniques and for testing and evaluation of instrumentation of value to individual investigators.

The Microscopy and Cell Analysis Core provides support to all Mayo Clinic faculty and staff engaged in research. Additionally, services are offered to non-Mayo investigators and research collaborators. For more information, please contact the core.
