Effect of Alcohol on Home Sleep Apnea Testing Using Peripheral Arterial Tone

The purpose of this study is to examine the possibility that patient with social pattern of alcohol use on the night of a HSAT testing may be sufficient to produce a misleading false test result.

Elegibilidad para la participación

Los requisitos de elegibilidad de los participantes incluyen la edad, el sexo, el tipo y el estadio de la enfermedad, y los problemas de salud o tratamientos previos. Inclusion Criteria

  • ≥ 21 years of age.
  • Social alcohol use in the evening within three hours of bedtime.
  • PAT HSAT test conducted without alcohol.
  • A high likelihood of being diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).
  • BMI < 45.
  • Expected delay in starting treatment due to the current backlog of positive airway devices and/or the typical wait to consult a sleep dentist.

Exclusion Criteria

  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding.
  • Alcohol use disorder based on DSM 5.
  • Use of medications that could cross react with or augment alcohol (benzodiazepines, benzodiazepine receptor agonists, opioids) and any sleeping medication.
  • Cognitive impairment that precludes self-report of alcohol or completion of the survey.
  • Unstable neurologic, medical or psychiatric comorbid conditions.
  • Sleep related hypoventilation.
