Determining the Accuracy of a Portable Ultrasound Unit for Measuring Nerve Size and Muscle Thickness

The primary aim of the project is to examine the validity and reliability of a portable ultrasound unit for the measurement of the median nerve at the distal palmar crease of the wrist.. We hypothesize the portable ultrasound unit will serve as an acceptable and reliable method for the measurement median nerve diameter. The secondary aim of this project is to examine the validity of a portable ultrasound unit for assessing muscle thickness compared to a high resolution ultrasound unit. 

Elegibilidad para la participación

Los requisitos de elegibilidad de los participantes incluyen la edad, el sexo, el tipo y el estadio de la enfermedad, y los problemas de salud o tratamientos previos. Inclusion Criteria:

  • Being between the ages of 18-75, free of any musculoskeletal conditions, or neurological related diseases or conditions that would prevent regular participation in occupational or activities of daily living.
  • No previous surgeries to the areas identified in the study protocol that will be evaluated under diagnostic ultrasound.
  • No injury to any of the identified ultrasound-image sites within the past 6 months.
  • Individuals that do not have a pacemaker or other implanted medical device.

Exclusion Criteria:

  • As indicated on a medical history form they complete, any individual who is currently being treated for or diagnosed with a musculoskeletal, or neurological disorder or disease that would prevent them from participating daily activities.
  • Any individual who has undergone a recent surgery or period of immobilization will be excluded.
  • Those individuals who present with any previous injury or illness that would prevent them from regular daily activities.
  • Those individuals less than 18 and greater than 75 years of age will be excluded.
  • Any individual with a pacemaker or other implanted medical device will be excluded from participation in the current study.
