A Study to Evaluate Whether or Not High-intensity Exercise Testing Can Detect Exercise-related Arrhythmias in Pediatric and Young Adults

The purpose of this study is to determine the feasibility, safety and diagnostic yield of a modified treadmill exercise stress testing with a running protocol in the detection of exercise-induced arrhythmias.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Male or female.
  • ≤ 30 years of age.
  • With or without heart disease, including congenital heart disease, under treatment with cardiovascular medications or not, including antiarrhythmic and beta blockers, with implantable cardiac defibrillator or not, with pacemakers or not.
  • Previously referred for EST by their primary care provider for the following diagnosis or presumptive diagnosis:
    • Syncope;
    • Sustained or non-sustained ventricular tachycardia;
    • Channelopathy;
    • Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy;
    • Family screening for any of the above.
  • Treatment-naive or under treatment with any cardiovascular medication.
  • With the ability to understand study procedures and to comply with them for the entire length of the study.

Exclusion Criteria:

  • Older than 30 years of age.
  • Inability to understand and/or to comply to the study procedures during the entire length of the study participation.
  • Contraindications for reaching peak exercise, as previously stated by primary care provider, or as determined by Exercise Lab staff physician.
