A Study to Evaluate Chest Pain Risk Stratification Using HEART Pathway in Community Emergency Departments

The objectives of this study are to evaluate utilization of chest pain risk stratification tools in a community hospital emergency department, to evaluate the effect on utilization of inpatient and outpatient resources for chest pain patients when HEART pathway risk stratification is utilized, and to compare the differences in the above outcomes before and after change from 4th to 5th generation Troponin T assays (which occurs in July 2018), in the midst of our study period.

Elegibilidad para la participación

Inclusion Criteria:  

  • We currently have HEART pathway as part of our accepted and ED Practice Committee approved chest pain guideline.  
  • We have educated our entire ED provider staff on utilization of this guideline. 
  • This study will be at retrospective review of the outcomes as providers utilize this approved guideline, so there is no randomization of patients or prospective data collection. 
  • All Emergency department chest pain patients who have troponin testing and HEART pathway score utilization completed will be included.

Exclusion Criteria: 

  • Chest pain patients who do not receive both troponin testing and HEART pathway score completion will be excluded as we do not currently have a way to gather this data in EPIC environment.
