A Study of Whole Blood-based Blood Biomarker (i.e., cytokine) that May Predict Status and Severity of Diseases

The purpose of this study is to see if whole blood-based blood biomarker (i.e., cytokine) predicts status and severity of diseases such as asthma, Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA), Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA), or Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD).

Inclusion Criteria:

  1. Subjects enrolled in Rochester Epidemiology Project and who resides in Olmsted County, MN, aged 5-100 years at the time of enrollment
  2. Those whose parents provide research authorization for using their medical records
  3. Those who receive medical care from Mayo Clinic
  4. Group 1: those with physician (rheumatologist) diagnosed Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (RA for adults) as type 2-low condition, but do not have any type 2-high conditions such as asthma, atopic dermatitis, or allergic rhinitis.
  5. Group 2: those with physician (gastroenterologist) diagnosed inflammatory bowel disease as type 2-low controls, but do not have any type 2-high conditions such as asthma, atopic dermatitis, or allergic rhinitis
  6. Group 3: those with asthma who meet the definite criteria for Predetermined Asthma Criteria, but do not have any type 2-low conditions such as JIA/rheumatoid arthritis, IBD, or Type 1 diabetes
  7. Group 4: those without asthma as healthy controls who do not meet the criteria for either probable or definite asthma by Predetermined Asthma Criteria nor have any type 2-high or low conditions such as JIA/rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, Type 1 diabetes, asthma, atopic dermatitis, or allergic rhinitis

Exclusion Criteria: 

  1. Those who have a history of primary immunodeficiency disorders identified by the International Union of Immunological Societies (2013)
  2. Those with medical conditions making ascertainment of asthma difficult listed in PAC criteria
  3. Those who or whose parents (<18 years) did not provide research authorization for using their medical records
  4. Those who do not receive primary medical care from Mayo Clinic
  5. Pregnant women
