Quantitative Muscle Ultrasound – Normal values and Development of a Neuromuscular Disease Database

The purpose of this study is to

  1. To develop a database of normal values for muscle thickness and echo-intensity in American children and adults.

  2. To determine the sensitivity and specificity of muscle ultrasound in diagnosing neuromuscular disease in pediatric patients referred for EMG testing at the Mayo Clinic.

Elegibilidad para la participación

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Children between the ages of 0 and 18 years from the Baldwin Community Pediatric clinic (well child visits as well as otherwise healthy children coming for sick child visits such as otitis media, sore throat, or cough).
  • Normal adult controls will be recruited from patients referred to the Mayo EMG lab, patients or family members presenting for care in the Mayo 14 or Gonda 14 lobbies, and members of the DAHLC
  • Pediatric patients referred to the SMH EMG practice for pediatric NCS and EMG under conscious sedation

Exclusion Criteria:

  • History of
    • Generalized pain or muscle weakness 
    • Diabetes mellitus or alcohol abuse 
    • Use of medication with known neuromuscular side effects 
    • Personal or family history of generalized neuromuscular disease such as myopathy, dystrophy, anterior horn cell disease, or length-dependent peripheral neuropathy
