Shared Decision Making in Patients with Neck and Back Pain – Options in Neck and Back Pain Management

The purpose of this study is to develop, in close collaboration with stakeholders and the Mayo Clinic Spine Center, an evidence-based decision aid for the management of acute and sub-acute cervical and lumbar radiculopathies – “Options in Back Pain Management.”

Inclusion Criteria:

Observations of Clinical Encounters

Patients

  • Adults ≥ 18 years
  • Appointment for cervical and/or lumbar acute or sub-acute radiculopathies

Field Testing and Iterative Development

Clinicians

  • Clinicians who meet with patients for diagnosis and management of acute and sub-acute cervical and lumbar radiculopathies

PAG Members

  • Adults ≥ 18 years
  • Member of the KER Unit PAG

Exclusion Criteria:

Observations of Clinical Encounters

Patients

  • Major barriers to providing informed consent (i.e. dementia, severe hearing or visual impairment)

Clinicians

  • None
