Exploring Duodenal Biopsies as a Biomarker of Pancreatic Cancer

To determine whether the microbiome, metagenome and metabolome of the tissue of the second portion of duodenum of patients with pancreatic cancer are different from that of patients with benign conditions not affecting the pancreas.

Subject and Control Inclusion Criteria

  • Adults aged 18 and older
  • Patients scheduled to undergo an endoscopy.
  • Patients with indications for endoscopy due to known of suspected Pancreatic Cancer but no other GI tract cancer, polyps and who are scheduled for endoscopy as part of their medical evaluation.

Subject and Control Exclusion Criteria

  • Individuals who do not comprehend English (i.e. participants must be able to read and sign a consent form without the assistance of an interpreter.)
  • Individuals who are unable to sign consent (e.g., mentally challenged, those declared legally incompetent)
  • Individuals regarded as belonging to a vulnerable population (e.g., prisoners)
  • Patients diagnosed with Helicobacter pylori infection
  • Patients with suspected GI tract cancer other than pancreatic cancer
  • Antibiotic use within the past 3 months
  • Any surgical procedure on the GI tract
  • Age <18 or vulnerable adults
  • Presence of bleeding disorders
  • Use of anti-coagulants
