Text Messaging Smoking Cessation Program in Surgical Patients

The goal of this study is to evaluate using a text messaging smoking cessation service in surgical patients during the perioperative period (before scheduled surgery and for 4 weeks post-operatively).

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Patients ≥ 18 yrs. scheduled for elective surgery at Mayo Clinic Rochester.
  • Current smoking, defined as > 100 cigarettes lifetime consumption and self-report of smoking every day or most days
  • Interested in quitting or cutting down on regular cigarette consumption the perioperative period or for good
  • Willing to try text messaging service
  • Mobile phone and data plan capable of sending and receiving text messages

Exclusion Criteria: 

  • Patients who report no interest in reducing combustible cigarette consumption
  • Current use of a text messaging smoking cessation intervention
  • Unstable psychiatric condition
