Summary

Award number — T32 AI07425

The Ph.D. Training Program in Basic Immunology at Mayo Clinic is a Ph.D. and M.D.- Ph.D. training program funded by the National Institutes of Health. The program supports predoctoral trainees in the Immunology Ph.D. track at Mayo Clinic Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, providing students with the requisite research and leadership skills to become heads of research laboratories and leaders in the biomedical sciences.

After one year of laboratory research, students develop written thesis proposals delineating the questions, significance and approaches to be pursued. The thesis adviser and four faculty mentors meet twice a year with each student. The program emphasizes publication and presentation of thesis research findings at national meetings. Faculty members mentor senior students to identify outstanding postdoctoral training opportunities.

The Ph.D. Training Program in Basic Immunology has an outstanding track record, with 82 percent of supported trainees attaining faculty positions and 18 percent attaining positions in the private sector.

Understanding how the immune system functions and its role in disease pathogenesis is critical to developing innovative approaches to patient care. The intersection of the science of immunology with the goals of academia, medical practice and the private pharmaceutical sector provides opportunity for program graduates and a mandate to train more scientists.
