Multidisciplinary Training in Digestive Diseases

Director

Faubion, William A. Jr. M.D.

Summary

Award number — T32 DK07198

The Multidisciplinary Training in Digestive Diseases program at Mayo Clinic trains qualified postdoctoral individuals (M.D., Ph.D. or M.D.-Ph.D.) for academic careers in digestive disease research.

The program's interdisciplinary, full-time faculty of scientists supports two tracks for potential trainees: a basic science and disease-oriented research track and a patient-oriented research track.

Basic science and disease-oriented research track

The basic science and disease-oriented research track is one of long-standing excellence, with training opportunities in:

  • Cell biology
  • Enteric neurosciences
  • Liver pathobiology
  • Mucosal immunology
  • Regenerative medicine and stem cells
  • Transcription and epigenetics

Training in this track is strongly supported through interactions with the National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded Mayo Clinic Comprehensive Cancer Center — Research, basic science departments at Mayo Clinic and the NIH P30 Digestive Diseases Center Core Grant.

Patient-oriented research track

The patient-oriented research track, which is educationally buttressed through Mayo Clinic's Center for Clinical and Translational Science (CCaTS), maintains training opportunities in:

  • Digital health and data science
  • Human genetics and epidemiology
  • Human imaging and physiology
  • Obesity and nutrition
  • The science of health care delivery and comparative effectiveness

Trainees can pursue their studies for a period of 2 to 3 years with salary support from the NIH.

A mentorship committee is provided for each trainee in addition to close interactions with the trainee's science mentor and the program director. The goal of the program is to train individuals for an independent research career in the investigation of digestive diseases.

Position availability

There are five postdoctoral positions awarded to the Multidisciplinary Training in Digestive Diseases program a year. The number of open positions varies.
