Mayo Clinic Summer Undergraduate Research in Nephrology and Urology

Director

Romero, Michael F. Ph.D.

Summary

The objective of Mayo Clinic's Summer Undergraduate Research in Nephrology and Urology training program is to expose future biomedical scientists and clinician-scientists to investigative careers in academic urology and basic urologic sciences.

Mayo's Summer Undergraduate Research in Nephrology and Urology training program introduces students to basic nephrology and urology research early in their studies — before a commitment to exclusively clinical careers. The research experience provided by the program allows students with talents and predispositions to basic research to develop interests in nephrology and urology research that can be nurtured and further developed as their career plans come together.

A priority of the training program is to ensure that trainees acquire positive experiences in the laboratories of established mentors working on basic nephrology and urologic questions in basic or applied science. Another priority is to foster the development and representation of minorities and women in nephrology and urology research.

The Summer Undergraduate Research in Nephrology and Urology training program lasts eight to 10 weeks, most commonly during a summer break, although this is not required. Students receive a stipend and a small amount for laboratory expenses.
