Training Opportunities
Students and fellows with biological, bioengineering or medical backgrounds are welcome to inquire about open positions in Dr. Brownfield's Lung Development and Regeneration lab. The lab is committed to creating valuable learning opportunities for students (undergraduate, post-baccalaureate, and graduate-level) as well as postdoc research fellows. The lab considers interested trainees admitted through several Mayo Clinic programs.
Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate research opportunities
- Graduate Research Employment Program (GREP). An hourly paid research employee program for students with undergraduate degrees who are pursuing medical school or graduate school admission, GREP can last up to two years and start at any time during the year.
- Post-baccalaureate Research Education Program (PREP). An intense program of up to two years, PREP is designed to expose students from underrepresented communities with undergraduate degrees to basic and translational research prior to application to Ph.D. or M.D.-Ph.D. programs. Participants receive stipends to cover their expenses.
- Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF). This is a 10-week research fellowship for undergraduate students in their sophomore or junior years at a U.S. college or university who are interested in pursuing admission to a Ph.D. or M.D.-Ph.D. program. While in SURF, students develop and complete (or work on) existing research projects and receive stipends.
- Undergraduate Research Employment Program (UREP). For students pursuing an undergraduate degree in science, technology, engineering or math, UREP is an hourly paid research employee program that lasts for a minimum of 10 weeks in the summer. You must have completed at least one year of undergraduate studies and be enrolled to return to your studies in the fall.

Graduate-level students
Each year, through a highly competitive selection process, students are admitted to Ph.D. or M.D.-Ph.D. programs at Mayo Clinic Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. Selected students pursue research in one of the eight academic specializations available:
- Biochemistry and Molecular Biology
- Biomedical Engineering and Physiology
- Clinical Translational Science
- Immunology
- Molecular Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics
- Neuroscience
- Regenerative sciences
- Virology and Gene Therapy
Students have exceptional flexibility to choose a research mentor. Mayo Clinic Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences provides stipends and full-tuition scholarships for all Ph.D. and M.D.-Ph.D. students.

Postdocs
Trainees with a great sense of imagination and motivation and a track record of peer-reviewed scientific publications (any basic science, medicine or engineering) are encouraged to pursue postdoctoral studies in Dr. Brownfield's Lung Development and Regeneration Laboratory.

Candidates with specific research skills, experience, or interests and ideas for research projects in line with current research projects in the Lung Development and Regeneration Lab receive preference.
