Education and Training

Dr. Hirsova's Liver Disease Immunobiology Laboratory offers valuable learning opportunities for doctoral students and postdoctoral fellows.

Predoctoral training

The lab is considering applications from students through several Mayo Clinic programs:

Each year, through a highly competitive selection process, students are admitted to Ph.D. or M.D.-Ph.D. programs at Mayo Clinic Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. Selected students pursue research in one of the eight academic specializations available:

  • Biochemistry and Molecular Biology
  • Biomedical Engineering and Physiology
  • Clinical and Translational Science
  • Immunology
  • Molecular Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics
  • Neuroscience
  • Regenerative Sciences
  • Virology and Gene Therapy

Students have exceptional flexibility to choose a research mentor. Mayo Clinic Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences provides stipends and full-tuition scholarships for all Ph.D. and M.D.-Ph.D. students. Candidates interested in the Ph.D. or M.D.-Ph.D. programs should take note of the application deadlines and apply through the appropriate Mayo Clinic website.

Postdoctoral training

Dr. Hirsova and her team investigate the cellular and molecular mechanisms that drive onset and progression of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). In particular, the laboratory's research is focused on the more progressive and inflammatory form of NAFLD termed nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH).
