Dr. Abu Dayyeh works with colleagues in a clinical setting Developing safe and effective interventions for obesity and metabolic diseases

Mayo Clinic's Advanced Endoscopy Innovation Translation and Clinical Trials Group, led by Barham K. Abu Dayyeh, M.D., M.P.H., focuses on the development of minimally invasive endoscopic therapies for gastrointestinal diseases, obesity and metabolic diseases.

Overview

The Advanced Endoscopy Innovation Translation and Clinical Trials Group, led by Barham K. Abu Dayyeh, M.D., M.P.H., focuses on the development of minimally invasive endoscopic therapies for gastrointestinal diseases, obesity and metabolic diseases. Dr. Abu Dayyeh and colleagues investigate the impact of alterations in the gastrointestinal tract on fundamental physiological processes regulating human appetite, metabolism and energy expenditure to devise endoscopic therapeutic tools for obesity and metabolic diseases.

Focus areas

  • Early preclinical development of devices and techniques to manage obesity and metabolic disease
  • First-in-human clinical trials of endoscopic bariatric and metabolic therapies
  • Prospective and multicenter randomized trials in therapeutic endoscopy, including management of walled-off pancreas necrosis, obesity and metabolic disease interventions, endoscopic treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease and robotics in endoscopy

Significance to patient care

Interventional endoscopy has fundamentally changed the management of complex human diseases, shifting the pendulum to anatomy-preserving, minimally invasive interventions. Dr. Abu Dayyeh's work translates directly to patients, offering those with obesity and metabolic diseases effective and safe interventions. These interventions are offered as part of a comprehensive program that includes dietary, lifestyle and behavioral interventions.
