SUMMARY

As a basic research scientist, Hai-Long Wang, Ph.D., currently studies the relationship between electrical brain activities (also known as brain waves) and brain functions in health or disease conditions such as epilepsy. Dr. Wang's research program, which is supported by the National Institutes of Health, is aimed at revealing the fundamental mechanism of electrical brain modulation.

Focus areas

• Epilepsy and brain modulation. In a collaboration with neurologist Gregory A. Worrell, M.D., Ph.D., Dr. Wang's main research focus is on the role of astrocyte-derived extracellular vesicles, which have a broad range of applications.
• Extracellular RNA. Working with Lynne T Bemis, Ph.D., from University of Minnesota Medical School, Duluth campus, Dr. Wang pursues interests in the identification and characterization of noncoding RNAs in liquid biopsies.
• Neuromuscular disease. Dr. Wang spent his early career studying neuromuscular disease using a single-channel recording technique to uncover molecular mechanisms of the nicotinic acetylcholine receptors.

Conclusions drawn from Dr. Wang's studies will not only have therapeutic impacts on both diagnostic and pharmaceutical approaches but also contribute to theoretical advances in basic biological science.
