SUMMARY

Susannah J. Tye, Ph.D., is the director of the translational neuroscience laboratory based within the Mayo Clinic Depression Center in the Department of Psychiatry and Psychology.

The primary focus of research in this translational laboratory spans neuroscience, genomic psychiatry and biomarker discovery. Strong emphasis is placed on research to rapidly translate biomarker knowledge into viable new treatment approaches, explore causes of psychiatric illness, and understand the relationship between genetic and environmental risk factors that may impact depression, bipolar disorder and stress disorders.

Dr. Tye is also interested in mentoring young scientists, helping them to expand their skills in preclinical and basic science research.

Significance to patient care

The Translational Neuroscience Laboratory within the Mayo Clinic Depression Center aims to characterize common molecular mechanisms through which stress is implicated in the development of mood and stress disorders, as well as through which effective treatments provide therapeutic benefit. The research group is actively working to extend this knowledgebase to the development of correlative blood-based biomarker screens to help target the needs of each patient and optimize psychiatric care.
