The clinical expertise and research focuses of Jorge F. Trejo Gutierrez, M.D., are in the areas of epidemiology and prevention of chronic cardiovascular disorders, with emphasis in atherosclerotic vascular disease.

Focus areas

• Predictors of suboptimal gain of exercise capacity in patients after cardiac rehabilitation. This study has led to the proper and early identification of those patients that need greater attention during their rehabilitation program.
• Contribution of different adiposity patterns and relationship with cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) in the prediction of total and cardiovascular mortality. These studies have found that abdominal obesity, along with poor CRF, was a better predictor of mortality than body mass index (a marker of total adiposity).
• International Study of Comparative Health Effectiveness with Medical and Invasive Approaches (ISCHEMIA) trial. Currently, Dr. Trejo is the principal investigator of an international study sponsored by the National Institutes of Health comparing different strategies in the management of stable patients with angina, the typical chest pain experienced by patients with atherosclerotic coronary artery disease. The results of this study, presented during the American Heart Association Scientific Sessions in November 2019, will reveal if there is a need for a significant change in the current management of this disorder.

Significance to patient care

The identification of those patients that are less likely to gain the multiple benefits associated with increased exercise capacity after cardiac rehabilitation has helped to focus extra effort in their program. In addition, those patients that have excess waist circumference, not only excess body weight, are made aware of the specific interventions to facilitate greater improvement in their cardiorespiratory fitness. The results of the ongoing ISCHEMIA trial will likely have a major impact in the evaluation and management of the most common manifestation of coronary artery disease (angina pectoris).
