SUMMARY

The research of Viengneesee (Vee) Thao, Ph.D., M.S., focuses on medical decision-making, which includes the use of simulation modeling to evaluate clinical and public health strategies. This research often includes conducting cost-effectiveness analyses and the evaluation of therapeutic treatments for diseases ranging from diabetes to opioid use disorder. Dr. Thao also conducts clinical outcomes research and analyzes large administrative claims data sets, such as the National (Nationwide) Inpatient Sample, OptumLabs Data Warehouse and Medicare Fee-for-Service.

Focus areas

  • Cost-effectiveness of pharmacological treatments for idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. Dr. Thao continues to evaluate the cost and effectiveness of anti-fibrotic medications, along with other clinical interventions such as oxygen and steroid use, for patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.
  • Screening tools for various diseases, including artificial intelligence electrocardiogram. Disease management and detection can be improved with screening tools. Dr. Thao evaluates screening strategies for a wide range of conditions, including penicillin allergies, skin cancers and atrial fibrillation.
  • Evaluation of telemedicine. Dr. Thao studies the cost-effectiveness of Mayo Clinic's teleneonatology program, which provides real-time audio-video telemedicine support to community hospitals when neonates require advanced resuscitation or critical care.

Dr. Thao's research helps patients identify good-value health care interventions. Her research, which identifies not only effective but also affordable health care. Dr. Thao's research also assesses the effectiveness of newly available interventions, resulting in attention to otherwise unknown therapies.
