SUMMARY

William Tatum, D.O., is a neurologist subspecializing in the field of epilepsy and working with patients with recurrent seizures. My research interests reside in the medical and surgical treatment of patients with drug-resistant epilepsy focusing on epilepsy surgery and neuromodulation. Of interest are seizure semiology and behavioral aspects, including symptoms of seizures and the application of video-EEG monitoring. In addition, my primary area of research and interest is focused on all forms of EEG recording and clinical neurophysiology.

Focus areas

• EEG and clinical neurophysiology. Dr. Tatum's research areas have included aspects of temporal lobe epilepsies, ambulatory EEG and video-EEG monitoring — resulting in published guidelines — and electrocorticography evaluating brain signals that subserve treatment pathways.
• Epilepsy surgery. Areas of investigation have included the use of invasive electrodes for diagnosis and functional brain mapping, laser interstitial thermal therapy, and all forms of neuromodulation.
• Seizure semiology. Clinical research has focused on behavioral signs and symptoms in patients with seizures with a special interest in the diagnostic use of smartphones to guide management.

Significance to patient care

Dr. Tatum's clinical research involving intraoperative electrocorticography has resulted in a patented recording device and an additional disclosure that has published results. For neurological and neurosurgical treatment of patients with brain tumor-related epilepsy, these results show that using a noncommercially available specialized recording technique yields improved outcomes. Additionally, Dr. Tatum and his colleagues have demonstrated that experts using smartphone video analysis can differentiate between epileptic and nonepileptic seizures with a high level of accuracy in the outpatient clinical setting.
