SUMMARY

The research interests of Karen L. Swanson, D.O., are in pulmonary vascular disease and interventional pulmonology. She is a member of the Pulmonary Hypertension Association and collaborates with the Mayo Clinic Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology and the Division of Cardiovascular Diseases as well as the Hereditary Hemorrhagic Telangiectasia Foundation.

Dr. Swanson has also been actively involved in medical education and was the program director of the Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Fellowship at Mayo Clinic's campus in Rochester, Minnesota, until transferring to Arizona in 2013. She is currently the chair of the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at Mayo Clinic's campus in Phoenix/Scottsdale, Arizona.

Focus areas

  • Pulmonary vascular disease. Specific areas of interest include pulmonary hypertension, hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia, portopulmonary hypertension and hepatopulmonary syndrome.
  • Lung cancer. Dr. Swanson is interested in the diagnosis and management of lung cancer. To this end, she collaborates with the Division of Radiation Oncology and with the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery.
  • Interventional pulmonary procedures. Dr. Swanson is interested in all aspects of interventional pulmonary procedures, including flexible and rigid bronchoscopy and pleural procedures. She is a member of the American Association for Bronchology and Interventional Pulmonology.

Dr. Swanson's research focuses on the advancement of the clinical care and management of patients with pulmonary vascular diseases and lung cancer to provide improvements in diagnostic therapies and treatments.
