SUMMARY

As co-director of the Mayo Clinic Developmental Endoscopy Unit (DEU), Dr. Storm's research is focused on novel device and procedure development in gastrointestinal endoscopy. Gastrointestinal endoscopy uses flexible endoscopes and tools passed through and placed on endoscopes to treat a wide range of diseases of the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, colon, pancreas and liver, among others.

Focus areas

  • Endoscopic bariatric (weight-loss) device and procedure development
  • Endoscopic devices for treatment of metabolic diseases (including diabetes and fatty liver disease)
  • Endoscopic removal of precancerous and cancerous lesions
  • Endoscopic treatment of gastrointestinal hemorrhage (bleeding)
  • Endoscopic ultrasound-guided treatment of cancer, abscess drainage and gastrointestinal bypass procedures

Significance to patient care

Minimally invasive endoscopic (through-the-mouth) procedures and surgeries decrease pain and recovery time for treatments that previously required more invasive (incisional) surgery. Dr. Storm and the DEU are working to increase the number of treatments that are available through endoscopy for the benefit of patients.
