Stern.Jennifer@mayo.edu Clinical Profile

SUMMARY

Jennifer I. Stern, M.D., primarily focuses on ways to improve the care and outcomes of people with headache and facial pain. She is involved in studies investigating therapies for headache care, as well as studies investigating health care delivery for patients with headache disorders. In addition, she works with colleagues specializing in endocrinology to investigate the molecular mechanisms of skeletal muscle atrophy, a poorly understood condition that affects many people.

Focus areas

  • Patient-oriented investigations of therapies for headache disorders. Dr. Stern is participating in several studies that investigate the use of newer therapies for migraine, cluster headache and other headache disorders.
  • Investigations of health care delivery practices for patients with headache disorders. People with headache disorders often have limited access to care. Only a small proportion of patients with migraine receive management in accordance with guidelines. Dr. Stern is involved in studies investigating models for more efficient and effective delivery of headache care.
  • Basic science investigations of molecular mechanisms that cause muscle atrophy and weakness. Dr. Stern collaborates with colleagues in endocrinology to investigate the molecular mechanisms of muscle atrophy. The associated weakness can lead to falls, disability and increased mortality in many people.

Significance to patient care

The overall goal of Dr. Stern's headache research is to help generate new therapies, techniques and care models to improve pain and quality of life for people with headache and facial pain. She hopes that her work related to muscle atrophy can help people stay safer.
