David B. Soma, M.D., is a board-certified pediatrician and sports medicine physician who has studied various topics in pediatrics, but his research passion is pediatric sports medicine. He has specific research interest in pediatric concussions and pediatric training.

Focus areas

• Pediatric concussion. Dr. Soma studies the relationship between body dimensions and risk for pediatric concussions. It has been hypothesized that children's increased concussion vulnerability is related to their larger head-to-body ratio. This was evaluated to determine whether it indeed was a risk factor. Other factors that seem to play a more prominent role in pediatric concussion are being identified and studied as well.
• Pediatric sports training. Dr. Soma studied the training habits of male and female youth soccer players of various ages. There is very little information available on this topic and by better understanding the training intensity and volume of youth, he can better understand risk for injury and the effect of training on performance.

Significance to patient care

Dr. Soma hopes to better understand risk factors for injury in an effort to support rules and training techniques that reduce risk of injury.
