SUMMARY

Yashbir (Yash) Singh, Ph.D., is a radiology researcher who investigates tools to extract data from medical images to improve patient care. In particular, Dr. Singh studies deep learning-based artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms and topological data analysis in medical imaging. His research focuses on developing methods that improve the ability to interpret artificial intelligence models for medical images. He is searching for new imaging biomarkers of disease through imaging analysis techniques.

Dr. Singh has collaborated with numerous outstanding researchers worldwide and has published research in the fields of machine learning, topological data analysis and persistent topology. He believes that a little geometric insight can go a long way in advancing research in these areas.

Focus areas

  • Primary sclerosing cholangitis. Dr. Singh is working on predicting the development of hepatic decompensation with researchers at Mayo Clinic and other institutions, including Norwegian centers and the University of Toronto.
  • Coronary artery disease. Dr. Singh is using algebraic topology to identify patterns and extract significant information from imaging data in coronary artery disease.
  • Applied algebraic topology. As a faculty member of the Radiology Informatics Lab, Dr. Singh is using this branch of mathematics to understand visual representations of data, which can translate into improved individualized patient care. This approach may help discover new trends in medical imaging data that can augment the characterization of rare diseases.

Significance to patient care

Dr. Singh hopes advancements in the application of deep learning-based topological data analysis can be useful when applied to medical images, such as ultrasound, computerized tomography and magnetic resonance. It also has potential applications in clinical research.
